We had been working out of a study room for three years — we always wanted a space of our own, with a seamless flow between the indoor and outdoor spaces. The studio is spread across 1,000 sq ft in Anoop Nagar, Indore. The layout is open: the walls between a hall, bedroom, verandah and kitchen were broken to accommodate the workstation and meeting area, with the kitchen further divided into a pantry and toilet.
The idea behind the space was to have a seamless flow of work and ideas — between everyone at the studio, with clients, contractors, vendors or any other agency involved. Having a personal outdoor space was always one of the reasons we never moved into a commercial building; not only does it provide a spill-over space, but also a visual relief. The meeting table is used for any number of activities — meetings, lunch and dinner, game nights, movie nights, or when someone needs a break from screens.
The palette is as minimal as possible, in natural materials that come with their own variations and vulnerabilities — very human-like. The walls and ceiling are plastered with neeru cement plaster; you can see beautiful patches and hairline cracks in it that change as it ages. The floor is finished with yellow South Tandur limestone, and the furniture is a combination of teak wood and veneer. All the windows work on a pivot hinge — clear glass above eye level, ribbed glass below — framed in teak wood. Space should never be static; it must tell a story, it should evolve with time.
